A Standing Desk For My Achy Body

So… being a WAHM/blogger/vlogger means I’m almost always in front of the computer working, writing, editing videos. Either than or I’m on my phone constantly on social media, keeping myself updated with stuff to get some inspiration of some sort for the vlog/blog or potential business endeavors. Anyway, that being said, I am sort of bound to have some issue with my wrist (I do have carpal tunnel syndrome) or with my back because I have unknowingly have terrible posture when I’m not aware of how I’m sitting down in front of my laptop.

Last month, my body has finally billed me of the stress that I’ve been putting on my neck, back and shoulders from having terrible posture. It all started while I was looking at the mirror, checking myself out from each side. Well, I must’ve pissed a muscle off because I suddenly had pain that was radiating from my neck down to my shoulder blades. It was almost lightning strikes of pain that would shoot down from my neck. I tried to brush it off and slather on some Omega Pain Killer (I always carry one!), but it persisted for another two weeks. I finally got a massage and my masseus is pretty good. She did hilot massage on that area and the pain wasn’t that bad anymore after that. But it came back after two weeks again, I don’t even remember what triggered it. I did the usual Omega Pain Killer thing and took a tablet of Arcoxia because the pain was just too much. I told my mom that I might need to see her rehab doctor too and get physical therapy help.

I was diagnosed with Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Mayo Clinic defines it as:

Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder. In myofascial pain syndrome, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in seemingly unrelated parts of your body. This is called referred pain.

Myofascial pain syndrome typically occurs after a muscle has been contracted repetitively. This can be caused by repetitive motions used in jobs or hobbies or by stress-related muscle tension.

The doctor sentenced me to a week of physical therapy and said that if it doesn’t go away, I’ll need to do an MRI test to see if it’s just really bad muscle pain or something’s up with my spine. Anyway, I’ve been doing rehab since Tuesday and my pain has drastically decreased. Aside from my daily therapy, I’ve been applying warm compress on my back 3x a day, minus the one done at the clinic. Good timing rin because I got this hot and cold shoulder herbal pad thing from Precious at the small bazaar stalls in Eastwood Mall the weekend before.

Then I apply Vi-Gel cream on the affected areas. That cream is amazing. I actually stopped putting on Omega and Salonpas because I feel like my skin is getting burned na. Aside from those, I was supposed to take my meds but I haven’t been taking them unless needed (Alaxan lang naman) because, well, I don’t want to. I want to heal myself without meds, unless super painful na.

OH, and I made adjustments with my work space. Look!

I decided to have a standing desk AND my usual work desk. I’ve read the pros and cons of standing desks and decided to try it out. I’ve had it since Wednesday, so far it’s been good. I’ve become more conscious of how my back and shoulders are positioned and I’m on my feet most of the time. I still have to tweak this standing desk because it’s not really made to be worked on. I need to have a laptop stand made so that my screen is eye level. But so far so good. I have my normal desk right beside it so I can take a break from standing when needed. Jacob has been using that table for homeschooling too.

That desk is older than me I think! My mom had this at her old dental clinic in Virra Mall. I remember it because I loved playing under it when I was little. This thing is vintage (not really)! Here’s a screencap of the table from my 3rd birthday:

So fellow WAHMs and mommy bloggers, take care of your back and mind your posture! Mahirap magka-MPS at mahal magpa-therapy!

That’s really alarming, I hope everything is well after your test so that you don’t have to go through any more check ups. That standing desk is good, it’s nice to stand up from time to time especially if you’ve been sitting for quite a number of hours.

My boyfriend has also purchased and assembled his own standing desk at home. He stands and sits every so often. He shared with me the health benefits of standing while working and not sitting all day long.

Good thing you finally had it checked out! I hope you won’t feel any more pain in the weeks after. Now about that table, what an effort to show us how old it is by showing your old photo!

Back pain is horrendous yet so easily avoided with better posture. I find a lot of my clients who have desk jobs eventually get similar pain issues as you. Another idea is to use an exercise ball / swiss ball as a chair, as long as when you are sitting your knees are at 90degrees. It is very hard to slouch sitting at one of these as you will fall off & you activate your core muscles at the same time.

I remember this one guy in my former office wherein he had his desk’s height in his cubicle adjusted so that he can work standing up. He has a high chair where he can sit when he feels his feet are aching. It was a conversation piece in our office most of the time and we would often try it ourselves.

I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing Myofascial Pain Syndrome. 🙁 But glad that you were able to find a remedy the pain it gives you. Anyway, I like the idea of the standing desk though. It certainly a unique way to spend working online than the usual we do which is sitting.
